There are so many exciting cities in the UK, and while Bath might not be at the top of your hit list it certainly has lots of events and culture going for it. When you visit Bath, you enter a city with a rich history, grand culture and plenty of green space too! If you’re not convinced, here are five more reasons you should visit Bath.
Step back to Rome
Believe it or not, there’s a reason Bath is called Bath, and it’s not because everyone who lives there is squeaky clean. It’s because the city has a really rich connection with Ancient Rome, notably the Roman Baths! If you venture to the heart of the city, you will be greeted with the sight of the unbelievably well preserved Roman Baths. Get yourself a guided tour and learn all about the culture and practises in the Baths, before trying some natural spa water, for a real taste of Roman life.
Literature lovers unite
Fans of Jane Austen will know that she made Bath her home from 1801 to 1806 and loved it so much, she actually set Northanger Abbey and Persuasion in Bath! A visit to the Jane Austen Centre is a great way to learn more about the author, as well as have plenty of fun. Patrons can get dressed up in Georgian clothing and learn about the cultural differences between now and then.
The annual carnival
On the surface, Bath might look like a sophisticated city that doesn’t have much in the way of nightlife. How wrong you’d be. Come on the day of Bath Carnival and you’ll find the streets packed with live music, colourful processions and a buzzing atmosphere. But you can truly visit Bath any night of the week and be met with a huge choice of cocktail bars, pubs, nightclubs and music venues.
It’s so easy to get to!
The easiest way to get to Bath is by taking the train. It only takes one hour from London, and when you book train tickets online in advance it costs next to nothing. If you live in Bristol, you can actually cycle or walk to Bath (the path is dedicated to cyclists and pedestrians only). Of course, there is the option to drive and park, but bear in mind that can be quite expensive.
Perfect for walkers
You haven’t been to bath if you don’t attempt the Bath Skyline walk. Undertaking this challenge is the perfect opportunity to photograph Bath from above, though it does mean taking on a four hour walk that includes going up and down hills continuously. In fact, some say that completing the Skyline walk is the equivalent of playing a game of football.
Of course, these aren’t the only things Bath has to offer. We haven’t even touched on the wide array of food and drink venues, shopping boutiques and photography opportunities provided by the architecture. If you want to see it all, you’ll just have to make a visit yourself!
